Given my obsession with this beautiful June birthstone, it come as no surprise that Pearls are one of my most favorite to design, to make and to wear. Pearls are truly special and add charming sophistication to both your everyday wear and formal occasions. However, these pretty unique masterpieces of nature require special care and attention if you want to cherish them for long. Here are some simple tips to help you keep your pearls beautiful and in excellent condition.
In order to maintain their beauty, please wear your pearls frequently and handle with care. The natural oils in your skin are good for pearls so they can be worn frequently. However, artificial oils like those found in moisturizers aren’t good for pearls. Also avoid contact with cosmetics, lotions, perfumes and hair spray.Pearls should be worn after the perfumes and lotions dry.
Household cleaners, detergents contain harsh chemicals. Make sure you take off your pearls and in fact, any jewelry, specially rings. It’s best to protect them from chemicals that will break their natural nacre and dull their luster. Also always protect your pearls from over-exposure to strong light and dry heat.
During travelling, if you have your pearls with you, it’s best to hand carry them or store them in a soft pouch or jewelry box. Since pearls are not hard like other gemstones, raking a mere 2.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, they are susceptible to scratches and damage.
Storing the pearls carefully when not being worn is important. Use a soft pouch or jewelry box but note that you need to remove any de-moisturizing sachets because unlike other pieces of jewelry, pearls need natural moisture to maintain their luster.
